How You Can Help

If you want to help the campaign against the European Union and the Lisbon Treaty, there are quite a few things you can do.

Sign a Petition to the Prime Minister

Tony Blair sought to improve his democratic credentials by setting up a website on which anyone can start a petition, and anyone can indicate their support for any petition. It has backfired spectacularly, because petitions opposing Government policy have been very well supported. Gordon Brown could well find an excuse to get rid of it. While it is there, it is an excellent opportunity for reminding politicians that the general public tends to oppose the EU.

Check the website occasionally, and sign up to the petitions you approve of, giving particular support to those which oppose the EU and its actions, particularly those which oppose the Lisbon treaty bringing back the EU constitution.

Help us Campaign

The branch has campaigned actively against the EU for nine years. We have built up a list of over 7,500 registered supporters, mainly by street stalls where passers-by register their support, and by distributing thousands of leaflets. We have over 80 active helpers locally, but can always make good use of more. If you'd like to help our campaign please contact us

Most of our helpers simply deliver leaflets in their own local area. When a new leaflet comes out, perhaps 2-3 times a year, we would call you and ask if you can help this time. You deliver in your own time, when it suits you.

If you'd like to get more involved, you could take on the task of being a delivery organiser - keeping in touch with a group of deliverers in your area and supplying them with leaflets.

If you don't mind meeting the public, you could help us collect signatures at high street stands. These are always good fun, and we get a good reception from almost everyone. Sometimes people are queuing up to sign.

Finally, writing to the papers is always helpful in getting our message across. Local papers are easier to get into than national ones, and the letters do get widely read. If you co-ordinate your letters with other helpers you can often get a dialogue going.

Spread the word. Tell your family and friends about what we do, and the campaigns we support.

Break Free of the Outdated EU

Run by the Democracy Movement. The EU has shown itself to be outdated and incapable of reform. The campaign aims to increase the already large proportion of voters who want to leave the EU and replace it with a free trade agreement.

EU Referendum Campaign

run by "I want a Referendum" a cross party campaign which includes the Democracy Movement, the Freedom Association and several other Eurosceptic organisations.

EU leaders are showing their usual contempt for democracy. Ignoring the rejection of their planned EU constitution by French and Dutch voters, they have brought it back, disguised as the Lisbon treaty so that they don't have to risk rejection by the voters again. The Labour manifesto for the last election included a clear pledge to have a referendum on the EU constitution. Gordon Brown has said he will not honour this pledge, and will deny us a referendum, which he claims is "unnecessary". The campaign aims to pressure him into granting a referendum, and to put pressure on MPs and Lords to

Better Off Out

run by the Freedom Association

Urges Britain to leave the EU.

Metric Martyr

run by the Metric Martyrs Campaign

This campaign seems finally to have won. First the EU abandoned its mad requirement to make it illegal to label goods in pounds or inches. Over-zealous Britush officials, however, continued to prosecute market traders. Now the Government has finally said it will issue guidance to councils to prevent them from prosecuting. However it is still a crime to sell goods in pounds or inches. The campaign is not over - the legislation still needs to be changed. For further details click here
