About us

This website is managed by the Surrey North and Spelthorne Branch of the Democracy Movement.

The branch has campaigned actively against the EU for several years. We have supported the Keep the Pound campaign, the campaign for a referendum on the EU Constitution, and the metric martyrs. We have built up a list of over 7,500 registered supporters, mainly by street stalls where passers-by register their support, and by distributing thousands of leaflets. We have over 80 active helpers locally, but can always make good use of more, if you'd like to help our campaign.  We now focus on the campaign for a referendum on the latest EU Treaty, almost identical to the rejected EU Constitution.

Our branch covers the Spelthorne and Esher and Walton parliamentary constituencies, together with Weybridge. The main towns in our area are Esher, Walton-on-Thames, Molesey, Hersham, Claygate, Thames Ditton, Oxshott, Cobham, Stoke d'Abernon, and Weybridge in Surrey, and Staines, Sunbury-on-Thames, Shepperton, Stanwell and Ashford in Middlesex.

Why we campaign against the EU

In 50 years' time, if EU leaders have their way, our children will live in a province of a country called the United States of Europe. The planned EU treaty is simply a disguised version of the rejected EU Constitution, and will take us a long way towards this goal.

Great Britain, proudly independent for over 1000 years, a nation which has given so much to the world, will no longer exist as an independent state. EU leaders make no secret of this plan - they are proud of their progress towards "ever closer union". Only in Britain do our politicians pretend that there is no such intention.

Worse still, the United States of Europe will not be a democracy. It will be run by the EU political elite and the EU bureaucrats. Both groups have always shown a contempt for democracy. Whatever we think of them, we will not be able to vote them out, as we can vote out a British Government. Being able to dismiss a Government is the essence of democracy.

It is because we of the Democracy Movement care passionately about the future of our country, and our children, that we give our time, effort and money to campaigning against the ambitions of the EU.

EU citizens have not voted for the EU project. Most people know perilously little about it. This website provides facts and figures about the EU, and the harm it does to us and the whole of Europe. Please read them, check the facts for yourself if you want, and decide whether you want to help us.

The Democracy Movement

The Democracy Movement is a grass roots pressure group, with 300,000 registered supporters nationwide. We are not a political party - we do not put up candidates for election. We welcome supporters from all shades of democratic political opinion. A network of nearly 100 local branches across the country is helping to mobilise public opinion against giving more and more power to the developing European superstate.

These campaigns can have an influence. We have been part of two successful campaigns - to Keep the Pound, and to prevent the Government from adopting the planned EU Constitution without a Referendum (last time they tried it). We continue to campaign against the pretensions of the EU, and to expose its pretesions (see our News of the European Union).

Current and Recent Branch Activities

We have been supporting two campaigns – the DM’s “Stop the Cheques” and the Freedom Association’s “Better Off Out”.    We have delivered 10,000 leaflets this year and in each of the past two years.

We ran a street stand in Kingston last September, and collected over 800 signatures, plus 70 offers of help.   Public reaction was overwhelmingly supportive. We used this as a springboard to launch a Kingston branch of the Democracy Movement.

In February we held a public meeting in Claygate. Dan Hannan, MEP, and Marc Glendening, Campaign Director of the Democracy Movement, spoke on the topic "EU Constitution? Give Us a Referendum". They showed that the Lisbon Treaty is almost identical to the EU Constitution rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005. The meeting was well attended, and we received 21 offers of help with our campaign for a referendum on the treaty. We followed this up with a Claygate parish referendum, which showed 96% support for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.

The views expressed on our website are those of the branch, and do not necessarily reflect those of the Democracy Movement itself.
